“This is one of those books that you don’t want to put down because you can’t wait to see what happens next. I cried, laughed out loud and had some moments where the author’s words caused me to really think about my own life and how I have acted and reacted to change. The way the book is written made me feel like I was experiencing the events along with the author and her family. Change is an inevitable part of life and the author’s positive outlook and faith are a great example to those in her life and to her readers. I recommend this book to anyone who is alive, because we all experience change in our lives on a regular basis. This book can teach us some lessons on how to balance the needs of people you love and the need to be your authentic self”
“Excellent read! Author examines the universal theme of change, and how we cope with change in our lives. She is honest in her brave account of how her own self-discovery allowed her to become more authentic as a person. She also discusses how her faith, her family, and her relationships were all impacted along the way. A beautiful account of her emotional journey!! I highly recommend this book!”
“Some people simply have the gift of writing and Dawn is one of them. After reading this book, I already have the feeling that I know Dawn. She is a strong woman and that showed in the story. The characters were awesome. There were many deep moments, emotional moments, and some moments were simply “awwww.” You get the picture. This is certainly a book everyone should read, because it will teach you a lot.”
“With a charming writing style that is one moment poignant and profound and the next wry and humorous, Dawn Elizabeth Waters shares her experiences of her life’s journey to being her authentic self. Though this book deals with coming out later in life (an experience that is not often discussed, much less written about), I recommend it to anyone who has struggled with the turmoil and wonder that change can bring. As I wrote in the heading, a refreshingly honest memoir about one woman’s experiences of being a “work in progress.”
“Those of us who have gone through a divorce will recognize the pain, fear and hope that Waters writes about here. now, imagine also coming out -the confusion, anger, hurt that also can happen AT THE SAME TIME! Waters managed to keep her cool through all of it-from breaking the news to her husband, her sons and their family and friends to building a new life on the “other team.” The reader might be surprised to discover that the “other team” isn’t so different.”
“Dawn Waters tells her story with humor and heart, and focuses on all the little details that coming out as an adult involves. Her personal journey is filled with love, joy, and hope, and resonates with spirituality and positivity.”
“Reading Dawn’s book and hearing her story was very touching, and at times I could literally feel her heartaches, and joys. What a pleasure to read her experience! I bought this book for my partner who is having a similar experience and I think it will give her hope as we embark on our new life together. She is a new member to the “other team”! Lucky for me!”

“This book is not only about a brave woman coming out at age 40, but also has a remarkable insight on facing challenges in our lives that we don’t always understand. It is not a one-time read. It offers ways to teach our children, and ourselves, about the powers of kindness, compassion, honesty, strength, character, family unity, and love.”
“I couldn’t wait to read Dawn’s book! I read it cover to cover on a 2-hr flight. Not only does Dawn fearlessly share her very personal story of coming out at 40, she also shares how the “shockwaves” affected those near and dear to her. This book is full of raw emotion and so many life lessons that we all, whether gay, straight, male, female, black, young, or old can learn from and apply to our own lives. I am a better person for having read this book, and will likely read it over and over as I find myself struggling with what life throws my way.”
“So nice to know I am not the only one who has gone on this life changing roller coaster ride. Helpful for my family to read also to know what I have gone though.”
“This was a very-to-the-point, open and heart felt book. As a woman struggling with similar issues, I very much appreciated Dawn’s openness and candor. I finished the book in 2 days and am still thinking about it days after finishing. A very brave move on her part to put her struggles down in writing. I love how she lays it out plain and simple, sprinkled with her own brand humor. Well done.”
“It is teaching me many things but most importantly to just be fearless and to love who I am. Thank you Dawn Elizabeth Waters”
“Very good! I read it in one sitting! Thanks for writing it! Felt like I was reading my own story only -I was 34 then, that was 16 years ago already!”
“I encourage ANYONE who struggles with their sexual identity to get & read this book. Becoming & living you true, authentic self in a world that wishes to NOT accept you as you are is scary. This woman was brave enough to begin her journey & live an authentic life, coming out of the closet & finding her TRUE self. Way to go! I am here to tell you it’s worth it -Kate Catore
“Attributed to Socrates, “The unexamined life is not worth living”, could well be Dawn Elizabeth Waters’ mantra in “Switching Teams.”She provides a blueprint for all of us who choose to live an authenticated life, no matter what our circumstances. “Be fearless. Seek truth, even if it hurts, and above all else, love without hesitation.” Ms. Waters sparkles, intrigues and hooks us from the opening analogy of the game of baseball to the game of life to the closing chapter “Full Circle”. It is truly a thought-provoking book and a great read.” -Kathleen Foor
